Maybe, maybe... I've been ditching our rabbi's Midrash class on Thursday nights for some time now -- I feel guilty about this because of the social
obligation regular attendance of events like this creates, but spiritually I've lost the ball in the ceiling lights...
What's going on is that I have lost my faith in cycles, and the idea of first/second comings of a Messiah figure indicates a belief that the cycle will bear utopian fruit... if we wait long enough. As Jean-Luc Godard said, "my work is the train, not the station, because I am no longer waiting."
In my case this means I've got itchy feet. Maybe I'll miss
the arrival of
the Kingdom of God/World to Come because I had to go
outside and stretch my legs.

observers of a cool autumn were just about as lucky as me.
the gilt along Snelling, trails up to where you sat on a tractor
at the Fair, or ate sweet corn we got from corner vendors.

the place you told me about, the place is in my hands from this height.
and outside every window at home is a view out to Highland Parkway.
the river and trees were turning yellow-gold like corn in your mouth.

the sky was flecked with clouds after a daydream. looking up
at the water tower, at the highest point, I thought this was the place
last October, and that it had turned out exactly right, for walking.

it takes time, it is incredible: four seasons
shrunk on your back porch, with Northern Lights skating around the block.

we haven’t seen tornados for a witch’s age, haven’t taken down
the banners and flags from the Fourth, when

all of us were celebrating the river and what it brought this place,

well that’s what holidays are. so long as the air’s dry

While we waited out a thunderstorm at Pizza Ranch in Harlan, IA,
 gave $20 to the pizza-jockey Sean, who didn’t know 
anything useful about grottoes in the town, but he needed the money
 to buy The Da Vinci Code — he’s a HS senior, wants to go to Rome 
so he can see the “secret altars” etc. that Brown writes 
about in his bastard accounts of the cabal du jour... 
also wants to major in Business.

Epiphany in lightning flashes and empty pizza pan
on the wettened Saturday night streets of Harlan.

to the cathedral, they are on trolleys or horses, on foot,
black hands, clean knuckles white pressed shirts.
they laugh in the streetcars or step quick, avoiding mud
splashing from another unpaved street. delicious cold of
every Winter Carnival, they were spectators and owners
and wives and entrepreneurs, until they couldn’t take the cold
anymore and went by train at last to California.

cold now, but Uncle Peter’s cigars still warm me
like Mars and Orion, laughing lights, the First Insurance
tower welcoming all to the garden edge of architectural bluffs
over Raspberry Island, Harriet Island, places named for school-
teachers and priests, the old cave Pig’s Eye staked out, lost
under all that work of decent people who could let
no mushrooms grow under their feet,

who saw more than selling whiskey to Indians in a place
they were making in the last eastern city before the wilderness,

I’ve run out of ideas.
They’re dragging the river,
but they won’t find anything.
The kind of trace they look for,
they can’t pull it up.
I climbed the fence
when no one was looking
and now everyone’s on watch,
digging around for me,
in the wrong place.

“You’ll never fix the mess
you’ve made,” someone said.
“You should know better,
what were you thinking?”

I had to get away from that,
get away from the petty crimes
I’ve been committing all along.
You think, or you ignore
your responsibilities,
and they send the State Troopers
out to patrol the streets, helicopters
hanging in the air over your neighborhood,
shake the windows, wait for you to leave
so they can draw a bead on you.

Someone’s bound to smoke you out—
they can wait, have all the time
in the world to catch you
in your erroneous ways,
new crimes to compound
onto the old ones.

So I jumped the back fence
and got out.

Pretty soon they’ll forget
who they were looking for.
I just hope I don’t run out of ideas first.

Every Time a New Hand Reinvents the Wheel

Every time I open up
I get this, “Why reinvent the wheel?”
But that's a lack of vision.
Every wheel needs reinventing.

New hands fix the functional circle,
Spread hub, set axle -- primary.
New hands, a new mind, every time,
Even if every wheel’s identical.

Manual is the new automation.

Separated wheel is distinguished
And the new hands also --
A spoke, a line, a circle of rubber,
Rim filling up on motion and air.

Automation demands hands.

Every wheel renewed! Who
demands dehumanization?
Even automation is a human pursuit.
Action, when we go looking for it.
